As World Book Day fast approaches, we’re excited to share how we celebrate this special occasion at nursery! It’s also the perfect time to highlight the importance of reading and offer tips on how you can inspire a love for books and stories at home.
What is World Book Day?
World Book Day is an annual event funded by publishers and booksellers across the UK and Ireland. It’s a day when schools, nurseries, libraries, bookshops, and literacy charities come together to promote the joy of reading. The goal is simple: by making reading fun and engaging, we can transform children’s lives! Studies show that only 1 in 3 children truly enjoy reading, but with the right encouragement, we can change that.
Making Reading Fun
The secret to fostering a love for books is understanding your child’s interests. Do they adore animals? Are they fascinated by dinosaurs? Maybe they love a story filled with silly surprises! Finding books that spark their curiosity is key to making reading an enjoyable experience.
At TKC, we encourage this by regularly visiting our local library. These trips give children the freedom to explore different books and choose the ones that excite them most. It’s a wonderful way to discover their individual interests and help them develop a lifelong love for reading!
ACTIVITY IDEAS
Story Basket Exploration
Create baskets with objects and soft toys that match book themes. Let children explore as you read the story aloud. Example: Farm animals for “Dear Zoo” or a Food basket for “The Very Hungry Caterpillar”
Sensory Storytelling (Great for babies & toddlers!)
Use props, textures, sounds, and even scents to create a multi-sensory storytelling experience. For example:
Provide toy fruits for children to touch as you read. At TKC we have a hungry caterpillar hand puppet that eats the foods as we read (this always brings lots of giggles).

“We’re Going on a Bear Hunt” – Let them walk through “swishy grass” (green scarves), “mud” (chocolate powder, oats & water in a tray), and “snow” (cotton wool).
Dress-Up Storytime
Encourage children to dress as their favourite book characters for the day. You can also dress up and act out stories to bring books to life!
We can’t wait to celebrate with fun-filled activities and share the joy of reading with all our little learners. Thank you for supporting us in making reading an enjoyable and enriching experience for your child…let’s turn the page to a world of adventure together! Stay tuned on Famly for snapshots on how we’ll be celebrating World Book Day at nursery.
